Bouldering is rock climbing without the need for equipment like ropes and harness - but with safety mats (also known as crash pads) for you to drop off safely any time. Your aim is to finish short, but often trying problems (a route or order of moves) using strength, balance, technique, and brain power.
Here are some basic & common lingo you’ll definitely hear in your time there:
Beta - Specific instructions on how to tackle a route. Something like a cheat code!
Crash pad - The thick mattress you'll fall on time after time. You'll get acquainted, don't worry.
Flapper - True to its name, this is a flappy piece of skin you'll get on your fingers when you tear or slice it while climbing.
Flash - When you successfully complete a route on your first try, perhaps with beta knowledge.
Problems - Also known as a challenge or a route to climb. Problems are graded by difficulty with V0 being the easiest, and V8 being the most difficult.
